Tamil Script Book
Description: This book introduces the Tamil characters based on similarity of shape. It is partly self-instructional and introduces vocabulary along with practice in writing.
Editorial Board Review: This is an excellent resource for the instruction and mastery of the Tamil orthography. The letters, however, are introduced according to similarity of shape rather than linguitstic/phonological principles. This proves to be confusing for both the learner and instructor, as the sounds of a new language are typically introduced in a language class according to linguistic principles of organization rather than the shape of the letter. The extensive exercises could be adapted by the instructor so as to give the student the full benefit of these materials. Another drawback is the arbitrariness in the selection of vocabulary items used throughout this book. Nevertheless, this book is useful insofar as it fills a much needed gap in the availability of materials to practice the very complicated Tamil script.
