At Home in Japan (Bridging Cultures - What No One Tells You)
Resource Category: Cultural Resource
Description: Interactive tutorial website that uses the homestay situation, with its potential and pitfalls, to take the user through a series of situations that are culturally "loaded." Developed by an anthropologist. Site includes references, resources, and teaching guide.
Editorial Board Review: Interactive tutorial website that uses the scenario of the homestay with a Japanese family to teach culture and language. It replicates the trial-and-error process of learning to live in Japanese society, working with cultural expectations on both sides. Can be used by teachers in the classroom or by individual learners. Includes a Teaching Guide. (SS)
This site does not just give information about Japanese culture, but helps the user discover how to understand another culture and develop strategies for achieving smoother communication. There are three parts: 1) The Cultural Child, 2) What You Need to Grow, and 3) Homestay Diaries: Growing Pains...and Gains. Each part is followed by modules with interactive activities and games. This site shows problems and issues from the two different points of view, i.e. the student's and the host family's. Thus, it helps students think about the issues more clearly. "Hon'ne" and "tatemae," and "uchi" and "soto" issues are discussed in relation to homestay experiences. It comes with a useful teaching guide, references, and links. This is great to use as a cultural supplement in your regular class to prepare your students for their study abroad and/or homestay, or for your own professional development.
