Beginning Korean |
|
Description: |
This book aims to teach the essentials of modern Korean in a systematic way. All material is given in the Yale Romanization. By working through the first section on the sounds of Korean, users will acquire the principles of the sound system and be able to proceed nicely with a total of 30 text lessons on a wide variety of topics and situations. The basic sentences of each lesson match a systematic presentation of the essential features of Korean grammar. |
| Editorial Board Review: |
Following explanations on the sounds of Korean, each text lesson of this elaborate textbook consists of basic sentences, supplementary vocabulary, grammar notes, exercises, conversation, vocabulary drill, and comprehension. In particular, the book provides rich and lucid information on Korean grammatical structure and vocabulary. This book (1969) might be less appealing to contemporary learners than other more recent textbooks. One weakness seems to be that the entire Korean sentences and dialogues are written in the Yale Romanization, which is not familiar to the general public. Another weakness is that numerous expressions are quite outdated and unnatural. Despite these shortcomings, the book may be useful to linguistically motivated learners of Korean. No audio tapes. |
