Coping with 'Advanced German Composition': Teaching Writing as Genre Writing
Resource Category: Cultural Resource
Language Resource
Description: Courses in "Advanced Conversation, Grammar and composition" are catch-alls for a variety of language skills and are fed by a student population with differing levels of communicative competence and expectations. In such a heterogenous setting, the process of essay-writing can serve as an integrating factor. The syllabus of an advanced composition class can effectively be structured around genre writing. Genre writing applies to a canon of essay formats, the lexical, and organizational conventions of which are taught setting recognizable standards.
Editorial Board Review: This article provides suggestions for instructors of Advanced Composition and Conversation courses. In addition to an outline of possible assignments for 3 academic quarters worth of work, the author describes how genre writing can be incorporated into the curriculum. Descriptions of three genres, namely Inhaltsangabe, Bildbeschreibung, and Charakterisierung are provided. This is an informative and useful article for any instructors teaching conversation and composition courses as it provides very practical insight which can be immediately applied to the classroom.
